Mallorca Excursion Offers and Tickets

- Cruise Ship Berths

Many cruise ships moor in the rear harbour area at the Muelle de Embarque Balearia (Dique de l'Oest). A modern cruise terminal for arriving and departing cruise passengers was recently built there. From this jetty it is about 900 metres to the harbour entrance. From there, you can take the air-conditioned city bus line 1 to the city centre, about 6 kilometres away, for €1.50. Tickets are available from the driver. There are also 10-trip tickets for 10 euros. It takes about 90 minutes to walk to the city centre.  There, too, is another berth near the entrance to the harbour. 

- Cruise Ship Berths

Adjacent to the marina, and significantly closer to the city, are the piers of the Baleária ferries. Once the cruise ship is moored there at one of the 6 berths of the Estació Maritima, it takes about 45 minutes to walk into the city. Alternatively, you will find bus stop 26 of bus line 1 in the immediate vicinity at the harbour entrance, as well as a stop of the popular Hop On Hop Off buses.

- Transfer from and to the Airport

Palma de Mallorca is scheduled as a changeover or departure and destination port on many routes in the western Mediterranean. Most cruise passengers get to know the island's extensive airport, which is around 14 kilometres from the berths. The organised shuttle buses of the shipping companies take about 25 to 30 minutes to cover this distance, and with AIDA Cruises, for example, they recently cost just under 20 euros per person, for the journey to and from the port. If you take a local taxi, you can calculate around 30 euros each way. On the other hand, it is cheaper and hardly slower to take the public bus line 1, which can take up to 45 minutes each way, depending on where you want to get off. If the cruise ship is moored at the Estació Maritima, you should ideally get off at stop 15, Port de Palma (Av. Gabriel Roca - C/ Porto Pi). From there it is only a short walk to the ship. If you have to go to the back of the port, to the Muelle Dique del Oeste, continue to the last stop 18, Escola de Nàutica. This is directly at the entrance to the port, from where it is a further walk of about 200-900 metres to the cruise terminal. Depending on the berth of the cruise ship. 

- Harbour Shuttle

Depending on the berth, the centre of the island's capital is about 4 to 6 kilometres away. A walk is not necessarily the best choice, especially in the summer months and when temperatures are very high. So, most shipping companies offer a shuttle service for this, for a fee, using modern and air-conditioned buses. The destination is the street Camino de la Escollera, which lies at the foot of La Seu Cathedral. The day tickets are available on the ships, usually from the excursion guides. With AIDA Cruises you last paid 6 euros per person. TUI Cruises charges the same price for children and adults 9 euros each. Alternatively, a ride on the public buses costs 1.50 euros per person. By taxi you can calculate 10 to 15 euros.

- Military Museum and Lighthouse

Directly on the southern port facilities is the San Carlos fortress. It was built in the 17th century to defend against enemy attacks and was also used as an artillery barracks, prison and hospital until 1980. Since 1981, the space has been used for exhibitions. Today, it houses the Museo Histórico Militar de San Carlos. Divided into 12 sections, visitors have access to an impressive collection of various weapons and accessories, as well as general information on the Spanish military. From the massive walls, there is a great view of the cruise port of Palma and a small café provides visitors with snacks and drinks. Visits are free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00-14:00. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays. The Torre de Senyals (Torre de Porto Pi) lighthouse at the harbour basin, built in 1290 on the foundations of a Roman predecessor, is one of the oldest lighthouses of its kind in the world.

- Taxi 

The official taxis in Palma de Mallorca are equipped with a taximeter and can be found on almost every corner. Drivers are also able to show a valid licence. Depending on the berth, you have to pay between 10 and 15 euros for a ride into the city centre. For the transfer between the airport and the cruise port, you will have to pay about 30 to 35 euros. The basic fare in Palma currently costs 2.15 euros and the price per kilometre is 93 cents. At night from 21:00-07:00, as well as on Sundays and public holidays, the basic charge is 2.20 euros and the price per kilometre is 1.10 euros. Standing and waiting times cost 17.70 euros per hour, or 20.15 euros at night. There are also surcharges to/from airports and cruise ports of 4.40 euros each. For telephone orders, another 1.05 euros is added. For destinations far away from the city, you usually have to include the return journey of the vehicle as well, as drivers are not allowed to pick up people outside their area of responsibility. In general, it is advisable to clarify the possible costs with the taxi driver, before starting the journey.

- City and Harbour Tours

The journey time of the well-known red Hop On Hop Off buses of City Sightseeing is 80 minutes per round, with a total of 16 stops. During the summer months, the buses run daily from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 20-minute intervals. A day ticket costs 12 euros per person. In addition, there are optional rides on a Hop On Hop Off boat. This also costs 12 euros for adults, and offers great views of Palma and the cruise ships moored on site.

- City Centre and Shopping Facilities

The Centro Comercial Porto Pi, a modern and air-conditioned shopping centre, is located at the ferry pier or at the Cruise Terminal of the Estació Maritima. Here, you will find numerous shops and boutiques. There are also a number of restaurants and cafés.  The old town of Palma invites you to stroll around. Around the Plaça Major square, in the adjoining side streets and partly narrow alleys, many small shops, boutiques and nice places to eat and drink have settled. The main shopping streets include Carrer de Sant Miquel, Carrer de Jaume II, Carrer del Sindicat, Passeig del Born and Av. de Jaume III. Directly on Plaça Major, an attractive craft market takes place every Monday, Friday and Saturday. There, you may discover some very special souvenirs. 

- Plaça Major

With a floor area of 94x129 metres, Plaça Major is the most important square in the old town. The surrounding arcades are home to numerous cafés and restaurants offering a wide range of culinary delights. Rows of three and four-storey houses from the 14th century rise above the arcades. The square hosts a traditional craft market every Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00-14:00, and the local Christmas market at the most beautiful time of the year. Outside these times, numerous street artists usually show their skills. A shopping arcade and a multi-storey car park are accessible via escalators below the Plaça Major. 

- Market Hall

Almost halfway between Plaça Major and Plaça d'Espanya is the indoor market Mercado del Olivar. The traditional market was opened in 1951 and with its 115 market stalls is now the largest and most important marketplace in Mallorca. It offers a wide range of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, sausages, fish, seafood, cheese and other foodstuffs. The upper floor houses gastronomic facilities and a supermarket. Access is barrier-free from all four sides of the building. Lifts and escalators have also been installed. The store is open Monday to Saturday from 07:00-14:30, and on Friday partly until 20:00. Sundays are closed.

- Imposing Cathedral

The impressive La Seu Cathedral is already visible from afar. It is only a short walk from the shuttle bus stop in the centre. The mighty cathedral is around 110 metres long, 33 metres wide and well worth seeing. In addition, the attached diocesan museum in the bishop's palace, founded in 1916, and the cloister, near which the toilets are also located, attract visitors. A particularly beautiful atmosphere is created in the morning by the east-facing sun, which sends its rays through the large stained-glass window dating from the 14th century. It consists of over 1200 glass mosaics and has a diameter of an impressive 12.50 metres.

A visit around 10:00 a.m. is worthwhile for the colourful play of light alone, provided the weather is good. It is open Monday to Friday from 10:00-18:15 in the high season from June to September. Out of season, it closes earlier, at 15:15 at the earliest. All year round, the museum is open on Saturdays from 10:00-14:15 and is generally closed for tours on Sundays. Admission is 8.00 euros for visitors aged 11 and over, including the museum. The latter can also be visited individually for a fee of 3 euros. If you buy the combo ticket with the cathedral for 8 euros at the museum, you can also go directly to the cathedral entrance, thus avoiding the often long queues at the ticket office of the church.

- Almudaina Palace

The Almudaina Palace (Palacio de Almudaina) is located directly on the west side of the cathedral. Formerly the seat of the Moorish rulers and later the city residence of the Mallorcan kings, today it also houses the regional government of the Balearic Islands. Unless official events are taking place, parts of the so-called royal palace that are worth seeing are open to the public and can be visited. This is possible Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00-18:00, on your own or as part of a pre-booked guided tour. During the high season from April to September, extended opening hours apply until 20:00. Admission is 9 euros for persons aged 17 and over. Children and young people aged 5 to 16 and pensioners pay 5 euros. Children under 5 are admitted free of charge. A guided tour costs 15 euros for adults. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, EU citizens are admitted free of charge from 3 hours before closing time, provided a valid identity document is presented. 

- Llotja de Palma

Not far from the mighty cathedral and close to the marina is a building worth seeing, built in the Gothic style from 1426 to 1447. The Llotja de Palma (Llotja dels Mercaders) was the seat of the sea trade exchange from 1452 to 1830. After its dissolution, the building was also used as a warehouse for various goods, for the manufacture of cannons, and as an art and architecture museum. Today, it mainly hosts changing art exhibitions. A tour of the interior is possible during an exhibition, usually free of charge and daily except Mondays, between 11:00-14:00 and 17:00-21:00. On Sundays and public holidays, it is only possible from 11:00-14:00.

- Historical Railway

At Plaça d'Espanya (Plaza España), there is a small station of the narrow-gauge railway Ferrocarril de Sóller (El Tren de Sóller). Colloquially known as the "Red Lightning", the 914 gauge trains travel at a more leisurely pace. The 27.6-kilometre-long railway line connects the island's capital Palma with the village of Sóller on the north coast. Officially opened on 16 April 1912, the trains were mainly used to transport freshly harvested oranges. Today, the nostalgic trains are mainly used by tourists, who enjoy the charming landscape during the 50-minute ride, passing through 13 tunnels and several bridges.

A 10-minute photo stop is usually made at the Mirador del Pujol d en Banya viewpoint. From April to October, the train departs daily from Palma at 10:10, 10:50, 12:15, 13:30, 15:10 and 19:40. Return from Sóller at 09:00, 10:50, 12:15, 14:00 and 18:00. During the winter months, there are 4 daily departures. From Palma at 10:30, 12:50, 15:10 and 18:00, back from Sóller at 09:00, 11:40, 14:00 and 17:00. In January, the wheels stand still. Tickets can be bought at every station, but only for cash. Payments by card or smartphone are not possible. The cost for the return journey is 25 euros per person.

If you take the combined ticket for 32 euros, you can also use the old tram from Sóller to Puerto de Sóller and back. This was Mallorca's first electrified tram line, which began regular service on 4 October 1913. In addition to newer models, the original railcars 1-3, as well as carriages 5 and 6, are still in service today on the almost 5-kilometre-long line. Railcars 20-24, which are also in service, originally ran on the streets of Lisbon before coming to Mallorca. A single ticket is available at the tram and costs 7 euros. 

- Bellver Castle

The Bellver Castle (Castell de Bellver), clearly visible from the cruise ship, was built in 1309 and is today the only preserved circular castle in Spain. Situated at a height of 112 metres, it offers an excellent view over Palma and the cruise port. Inside is a museum on the history of the city. The bus stops for bus lines 3, 20, 46 and 50 are about a 20-minute walk from the castle. Open daily from 10:00-19:00 in the high season, admission costs 4 euros per person. Senior citizens and young people between 14 and 18 pay half price. Children under 14 are admitted free of charge. On Sundays, admission is generally free for everyone. From October to March, the museum is closed on Mondays. 

- Playa de Palma

Located south of the airport, Can Pastilla is the start of a 5.5-kilometre-long stretch of beach that runs southeast to S'Arenal. Along the very well-developed promenade of the popular Playa de Palma (Platja de Palma), one hotel follows the next. In between, a few shops and boutiques offer their wares. There are also a large number of bars, restaurants and clubs. The long beach is easily reached by bus (line 25). You can get on the bus in the city centre at the Plaza de la Reina with its small roundabout and fountain. You can get off at 38 Llaüt (Mega Park), a famous and notorious party mile.

- Aquarium

The Palma Aquarium is located at 21, Manuela de los Herreros i Sorà Street, close to the famous Playa de Palma beach. The aquarium, which opened in 2007, is barrier-free and home to around 8,000 animals from around 700 species. These are divided into a total of 55 tanks with true-to-life replicas of the corresponding habitats and ecosystems. Among them is also the largest shark tank in Europe. Regular admission costs €28.50 each for people aged 13 and over and €18.50 each for children aged 4 to 12. Children under 4 are admitted free of charge. Open daily from 09:30-18:30 and last admission is at 17:00.
